The Mahabharata

This site houses the electronic text of the Mahabharata. Based on John Smith's revision of Prof. Muneo Tokunaga's version of the text, it was subjected to detailed checking by a team of assistants based in the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) in Pune, and is made available with BORI's agreement.

Here you may:

• register as a user of the electronic text of the Mahabharata
• access the electronic text of the Mahabharata (registered users only)
• access the supplementary passages of the Mahabharata (registered users only)
• read an account of the early phases of the project to bring into being a complete, accurate electronic Mahabharata

In addition, a collection of fonts suitable for use with Sanskrit and other Indian languages is available, and also a collection of utility programs allowing easy switching between encodings (character sets), high-quality Nagari printing of Mahabharata and Ramayana text, metrical analysis of Sanskrit verse, etc.
