% Mahabharata: supplementary passages - General information % Last updated: Fri Sep 25 2020 % Encoding: Unicode Devanagari % Electronic text (C) Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, % Pune, India, 2001 ========================================================== Electronic text of the Mahabharata: supplementary passages ========================================================== This file contains information about the supplementary passages to the electronic text of the Mahabharata. Anyone who intends to make use of the text is asked to read it carefully. It is divided into three sections: * The status of the text * The format of the text * Notes on the text John D. Smith University of Cambridge ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The status of the text ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The electronic text of the Mahabharata is Copyright (C) The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI), Pune. This authorised and regularly updated text is available only via the web page http://bombay.indology.info/mahabharata/statement.html. Please do not provide copies of the text to others. The text is as accurate as possible, but errors may well still appear. If you believe you have found an error, please report it by email to Suvarna Deshpande (suvarnad09 [at] gmail.com) or Pranav Gokhale (pranavpg88 [at] gmail.com). Before reporting any error, please read the rest of this document! Corrections will be made to errors remaining in the text as they come to light. Check the “Last updated” date at the head of each parvan against the current dates listed on the distribution website (URL http://bombay.indology.info/mahabharata/pune_text/apps.html) to see whether you need to download newer versions. The text was typed up by a team consisting of Kirti Sameer Kulkarni, Mukta Lalit, Pradnya Anant Rayrikar, Shilpa Mulay, Suvarna Rajarshi and Swati Choukar. The task was done throughout in duplicate, so that slips made by one assistant would show up through comparison with the work of another. I was responsible for collating the results, which form the basis of this electronic text. For their dedicated work, and the levels of accuracy that they have brought to a long and demanding task, the members of the team have earned the gratitude of all those who make use of the electronic Mahabharata. My own gratitude goes in addition to Prof. Saroja Bhate, without whose help the project would never have reached such successful results. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The format of the electronic text ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Line-numbers --------------- The supplementary text is divided into eighteen files, one per main book (पर्वन्) of the Mahabharata. Each file consists of (a) all the “star passages” cited in the critical apparatus for that पर्वन्, (b) all the “Appendix I” passages. Star passages are short fragments of text attested in one or more manuscripts but not accepted into the constituted text of the Critical Edition; similar but longer passages are located in Appendix I to each पर्वन्. The critical apparatus introducing each passage is reproduced, with every line starting with a “percent” sign (“%”). Then follows the passage itself, with each line prefaced by an identificatory number. For star passages, this number typically takes a form such as “01*2345_67”, which would mean “पर्वन् 1, star passage 2345*, line 67”; for App. I passages the form is “01_234_5678”, which would mean “पर्वन् 1, App. I passage 234, line 5678”. These line numbers exactly follow the printed numeration (typically marked every five lines). Lines such as “भीष्म उवाच” or “Colophon” are not counted in the printed edition; in the electronic text, they bear the same line number as the preceding line (or a number ending in “0” if they occur as the first line of a passage), but the underscore separating passage number from line number is replaced by an equals sign. Thus if the 67th line of a star passage were followed by “भीष्म उवाच”, the text would read “01*2345=67 भीष्म उवाच”. There is a minor difference between Book 1 and the other books in the form assumed by त्रिष्टुभ् verses, because these are numbered by the double-पाद in Book 1 but by the पाद everywhere else. In the electronic version of Book 1, त्रिष्टुभ् verses in the supplementary passages are therefore reproduced with two पादs to the line, the पादs being separated by a semicolon (“;”) as in the main text. In every other पर्वन्, त्रिष्टुभ्s are reproduced with one पाद to the line. Inevitably, the supplementary passages are not quite as consistently formatted in the printed text of the Critical Edition as is the main text. There are therefore some inconsistencies of format in the electronic version also. Some examples: Where an extra passage has to be accommodated between two passages that have already been assigned numbers, the editor normally adds a letter to its passage number, as with star passage 240a (1.11.11). This has the result that the central component of the line number has to contain five characters instead of the normal four. In two star passages in Book 4 (120*, 180*), there are over 100 lines to the passage, so that the final component of the line number contains three digits instead of the normal two. A passage may be laid out by the printer in a format different from the normal one, as happens with Appendix I, passage 21, in Book 3, and Appendix I, passage 3, in Book 6. In such cases the format of the electronic text has also had to be modified. In one case (Appendix I, passage 83, in Book 1) the editor reproduces two passages with the same numbering, with the result that the line numbers are ambiguous. 2. Encodings ------------ The text is available in three encodings (character sets) commonly used for Sanskrit and other Indian languages: for details see http://bombay.indology.info/mahabharata/apps.html. Please note that in the ASCII encoding accents on text cited in the critical apparatus cannot be reproduced. 3. Spelling conventions ----------------------- As in the main text, forms such as किं चित् (/चन/अपि) are everywhere spelt as two words in Roman representations of the electronic text (assuming that sandhi does not prevent this, as in कापि), whatever the usage in the printed text; similarly किं स्वित्, etc. The word कच्चित् of course is unchanged, as are compounded forms such as किंचिच्छेष “having little left remaining”. In the Devanagari versions of the text, forms such as किंचित् are spelt as single words to respect normal usage in Indian scripts. The phrase अथ वा is always written as two words. The same applies to periphrastic perfects: कथयां बभूव, etc. In passages of text where a word is split across two lines and hyphenated, the electronic text includes the whole of the word on the first line. The only exception to this occurs where a long compound is split between two पादs of a त्रिष्टुभ्; in this case, the hyphen is retained. In all other respects, the spelling is entirely unchanged from that of the printed text (see below). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Notes on the electronic text ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Unlike the main text, in which obvious typographic and similar errors have been corrected, the text of the supplementary passages has been reproduced exactly as printed; the difference of approach results from the fact that the main text is a product of human editing aimed at realising an ideal, while the supplementary passages are verbatim citations of manuscripts and may contain scribal errors. The following notes suggest corrections of what are nonetheless most likely printing errors; notes in [square brackets] comment on quirks in numbering, printing, etc. 02*0285 [There are two passages numbered 285; the second should be 285a] 02*0627 [There are two passages numbered 627; the second should be 627a] 03*0319 [The heading probably ought to read, “After 12”, not “After 11”] 03*0654_02 अभिभूस्त्वं बालकौ बालिशौ च 03*0765 [There are two passages numbered 765; the second should be 765a] 03*1057 [There are two passages numbered 1057; the second should be 1058] 03*1364_01 सोऽप्यदृश्याय भूताय नभस्यमिततेजसे 04*0428_02 त्वया कृतं महाबाहो यदि जीवितुमुत्सहे 04*0704_06 पुष्पाण्यत्र सुवर्णानि शतपत्राणि भागशः 05*0333_02 कथं वीरैर्जितां भूमिमखिलां प्रतिपद्यथाः 05*0372 [The heading probably ought to read, “After 82”, not “After 83”] 05*0408 [The heading probably ought to read, “After 24”, not “After 23”] 05*0413 [The heading probably ought to read, “After 41”, not “After 40”] 06*0200 [The heading probably ought to read, “After 74”, not “After 75”] 06*0280 [The heading probably ought to read, “After 10”, not “After 11”] 06*0399_01 कशाभिस्ताडयामासुः पार्ष्णिभिश्च मुहुर्मुहुः 06*0412 [The heading probably ought to read, “After 52”, not “After 51”] 06*0451_02 यस्य लाङ्गूलशब्देन स्फुटतीव नभस्तलम् 07*1120 [The heading probably ought to read, “after 27”, not “after 28”] 07*1415 [The heading probably ought to read, “After 61abc”, not “After 42abc”] 08*0007_39 पीतं च क्षतजं तस्य धार्तराष्ट्रस्य संयुगे 08*0382_03 क्रोधदीप्तेक्षणः शल्य निर्दहन्निव चक्षुषा 08*0444_03 अस्त्रैः कर्णं महेष्वासं समन्तात्पर्यवारय 08*0529_05 केशवं नवभी राजन्बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत् 08*0550 [The heading probably ought to read, “After 32cd”, not “After 32ed”] 08*0650 [The heading probably ought to read, “After 17”, not “After 16”] 08*0850_01 यदेकः समरे सर्वान्योधयामास मामकान् 08*0871_02 कृतार्थो वा गमिष्यामि हतो वा स्वर्गमाप्नुयाम् 08*0892_01 जिघांसवः पार्थमसह्यविक्रमं 08*0898 [The heading probably ought to read, “For 7cd”, not “For 7ed”] 08*0932_05 स समीपस्थितो भीमो विसंज्ञं वीक्ष्य ते सुतम् 09*0052 [The heading probably ought to read, “After 40”, not “After 41”] 12*0325ff.
